Frequently Asked Questions About Tanning

Exfoliate 24 hours before your spray tan with a basic loofah or wash rag. Also, stay away from any heavy exfoliating oils. After showering, DO NOT apply lotions, oils, or perfumes.

Shaving should be done 12 hours before your spray tan. Streaks may be an issue in your final tan if you shave right before, due to the wax from the shaving bar.

Manicures, pedicures, and waxing should be done before your spray tan.

Make sure to bring loose-fitting clothes that fully cover your body after your tan to avoid skin-to-skin contact.

The length of your tan depends on skin prep and post-care/maintenance afterwards. Most people notice their tan begins to fade after about 4-7 days. Moisturizing and staying hydrated are two important factors that help maintain color. Refrain from showering in hot water to prolong your tan as well. If you choose to use self-tanners after your tanning session, it is recommended that you use only Dolce Glow products, as mixing with other brands can give a yellow tone. Dolce Glow self-tanning products can be purchased from your tanning professional at your appointment, or www.dolceglow.com, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks, Revolve, and Ulta.

The tan artist will help you decide on the best solution and/or tone for you on the day of your spray tan. We will give you a timeline on when to rinse off based on the solution used.

Your rinse time depends on the solution used by your tan artist, and they will tell you the time to rinse at your appointment. Your rinse time is very important to avoid over-dehydration in the skin, which can lead to scaly-looking or spotty skin. Do not leave the bronzer on longer than the rinse time given for the same reason. Leaving the cosmetic bronzer on longer than the time allowed will not make your tan darker. The tan artist is the only one in control of making you darker.

Absolutely NO soap. A really slow rinse with lukewarm water is best. Only use your hands to remove the bronzer, and focus your attention on your legs, behind your arms, in your ears, and around your nose, etc. The #1 cause for streaks is that the bronzer was not rinsed off properly and can stain the skin for a few days, so it’s important that the first rinse is thorough. Pat yourself dry with a soft towel afterward.

Get back in the shower and do another rinse. If that doesn’t help, rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab will help remove the streak. Keep in mind that it will also remove the tan in the area you apply it to. We do not recommend respraying if this occurs.

Wipe the areas you don’t wish to have the solution with alcohol pads. The alcohol helps remove the solution.

Wait 12 hours AFTER your initial rinse before applying any kind of lotion. CeraVe, Hemps, Native, Lubriderm, Naturium Bio-Lipid Restoring Moisturizing Body Lotion with Shea Butter (fragrance-free) are a few recommended lotions.. Moisturizing is the key to prolonging your spray tan, so moisturizing twice daily will give you the best results. It’s also important to stay hydrated and drink lots of water throughout the day.

Wait 24 hours for it to fully develop after rinsing. If it’s still not dark enough, we can try another solution at your next appointment.

Try rinsing again, soaking in a bathtub, or sitting in a sauna/jacuzzi. These methods will remove some of the bronzers to lighten the color.

Wait 24 hours. For best results, use soap only on lady parts to avoid depleting the color. Also, minimal scrubbing and shaving since this can strip the tan away.

Yes! The most important thing to remember is that the solution does not contain any UV protection/sunscreen. We recommend using a water-based SPF over your spray tan. You will still be able to develop a tan naturally in the sun while keeping your skin protected.

NO! We do not advise having a spray tan over peeling skin. The full peel and heal process can take anything between 3-6 weeks. You will have to reschedule your appointment if peeling occurs.

Yes, it will remove the majority of the tan and/or lighten it. Seawater, chlorine, and hot tubs can accelerate the fading of the tan. I recommend wearing waterproof sunscreen to help repel the water.

Bra/underwear, swimwear, or nude. Your tan artist may also provide you with disposable garments if you prefer. Whatever you are most comfortable with.

DHA is FDA-approved and only penetrates the outermost layer of the skin. There is no evidence that DHA is harmful. However, we do recommend that you consult with your physician first.

Not unless you are completely healed. You should never tan with healing/open wounds, and it’s recommended to get your surgeon’s medical advice on when it is safe to tan over new scars (if any).

Only if the area is completely healed.

Only with the parents’ consent.

We recommend scheduling a patch test prior to coming in for a full tan. You may still tan, but a waiver will need to be signed prior to getting spray tanned.

Unfortunately, you may notice in the first few days that minimal bronzer can rub off on your clothes/sheets. This will be minimal and will rinse off. However, your first initial rinse must be thorough as this will minimize any risk of rub-off.

The best time to get sprayed before any event is 2-3 days prior. If you have a future event, it is advisable to have a “practice tan” well in advance.

You may work out as normal after the first rinse. We do, however suggest that you refrain from wearing any tight clothing that can rub your fresh spray tan.

No, you will not appear orange with a Dolce Glow Tan. We use the highest quality solution and
guarantee that you will not turn orange (if you follow rinse guidelines).

Soak in baby oil for an hour, then shower to exfoliate everything off your skin. You can also shower with hot water and exfoliate the color off. Japanese scrubs/exfoliating mitts help to remove the tan as well.

Yes, unfortunately, in some instances, the tan may stain your sheets or clothing, but we recommend that if you are sleeping in your tan while it develops that you wear full pajamas to minimize the risk of staining your sheets. This also helps minimize skin-to-skin contact (i.e., hands touching skin). The bronzers are just like makeup and can be removed from sheets/clothing and washed following the care instructions.
